University of Pennsylvania hosts 3rd Annual Nursing Story Slam
Nurses on staff at Philadelphia’s Penn Nursing and Penn Medicine recently participated in a virtual event to share their true, personal stories about the breadth, depth, and diversity of nursing.
The 3rd Annual Nursing Story Slam was held on February 17, 2021. This year’s theme was “Stepping Up” based on the last year being so unique for nurses and midwives due to racial unrest and the coronavirus pandemic. All stories were about how nurses “answered the call” to help the world be a better, safer place for all. Storytellers also participated in a workshop and coaching session prior to the event.
Video footage of this year’s event is not yet posted online, but stories from the inaugural event in February 2019 and the second annual event in February 2020 are available online. Nursing experts predict bilingual nurses will be more valued
Officials at Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN, have released a series of 21 predicted trends for 2021, and among the list is the belief that bilingual nurses, particularly those who speak Spanish, could be more attractive to employers than their monolingual nurse peers.
The United States population continues to become increasingly diverse, with at least 350 languages believed to be spoken in American homes, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. After English, Spanish is said to be the most widely spoken language in the country, with an estimated 40 million U.S. residents, or 13% of the population, speaking Spanish in the home.
Podcast spotlight: Straight A Nursing
A podcast hosted by Maureen Osuna, MSN, RN, CCRN, a critical care and PACU nurse based in California, is receiving positive reviews from future nurses. On the Straight A Nursing podcast, Nurse “Mo” shares useful tips, clinical wisdom, nursing inspiration, and exploration of key topics ranging from the basics of nursing care to complicated cases seen in the ICU.
Nearly 140 episodes have been published as of February 2021 and are available on iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher. Osuna’s Digital Health Media network also produces a number of other podcasts.
