Learn more about the New York Infection Control Requirement for Healthcare Professionals

What is the New York healthcare professional infection control requirement?

In accordance with Section 6505-b of the Education Law or Section 239 of the Public Health Law, certain healthcare practitioners licensed in New York must complete training pertaining to infection control and barrier precautions as appropriate to their practice.  The goal of this training is to prevent the transmission of HIV and HBV in healthcare practice. 


What professions are required to comply with the requirement?

All NY-licensed dentists, dental hygienists, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, optometrists, and podiatrists must complete this training pursuant to Section 6505-b of the Education Law. All NY-licensed physicians, physician assistants, and specialist assistants must complete this training pursuant to Section 239 of the Public Health Law.


When is the deadline for meeting this requirement?

New York infection control required training must be completed upon your first registration for licensure and every four years thereafter.
