Michigan RNs must earn 25 hours of continuing education within the 2-year period before their renewal date. Licensees may not complete more than 12 credit hours during a 24-hour period via online or electronic media.

  • NEW REQUIREMENT: The Public Health Code recently added a new rule. Implicit Bias training is now required as a condition for initial licensure or registration and license or registration renewal. Renewing licensees and registrants must complete 1 hour of implicit bias training for each year of their license or registration cycle. For any initial renewal after June 1, 2021, licensees will only need to have 1 hour for each year after the rule’s inception date of June 1, 2021.
  • At least 2 of the 25 required hours must be in pain and pain symptom management
  • Licensees must complete a one-time training in identifying victims of human trafficking.
  • Beginning January 6, 2022, anyone pursuing initial licensure in Michigan must complete Human Trafficking Training prior to obtaining a nursing license. The Human Trafficking Training is a one-time training and is not part of the continuing education requirement but may be satisfied via a continuing education activity.

Why Implicit Bias Training?

Research shows that unconscious biases often affect clinicians’ perceptions of others, influencing decisions and actively contributing to health inequalities. Typically, implicit biases are negative and unintentionally lead to disparities in interactions, treatment decisions, and overall access to care.

The purpose of implementing implicit bias training is to make nursing professionals aware of this modifiable risk, which plays a role in health disparities. Elite Learning’s interactive online course meets Michigan’s standards for this requirement.
