Report calls for bold changes in nursing after pandemic
A new report by the Tri-Council for Nursing is expected to inspire change among six distinctive themes deemed essential to the future of nursing education, according to national leaders in nursing and healthcare education.
The report, “External Link Transforming Together: Implications and Opportunities from the COVID-19 Pandemic for Nursing Education, Practice, and Regulation,” is the result of more than 100 of the industry’s key opinion leaders who met this past winter to discuss practice and policy. The goal of the conversation was to identify critical lessons learned from the pandemic and brainstorm opportunities for transforming nursing and healthcare, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
The report covers the areas of:
- Equity and health equity
- Ethics
- Nursing workforce
- Innovation
- Inter-professional emergency planning and response
- Mental health and well-being
Within each category, the group outlined priority items that present the most promising areas of opportunity and an actionable framework for educators, practitioners, and public policy decision-makers. The Tri-Council for Nursing, an alliance of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the American Nurses Association (ANA), the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL), the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), and the National League for Nursing (NLN), is a recognized leader in collective innovation and transformation.

ANA approves of report on future of nursing
Officials with the American Nurses Association (ANA) have announced their support of the recent release of The National Academy of Medicine’s “The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity” report, a consensus study from the National Academy of Medicine.
The vision and recommendations in this report offered by an expert committee strive for health equity in the United States by strengthening the capacity and expertise of nursing. The recommendations focus on current and future challenges impacting the nursing workforce, its leadership, and education in order to reduce health disparities and address social determinants of health to advance health equity.
“Optimizing the vast contributions and integral role of contemporary nursing practice and leadership is essential to providing equitable, accessible, quality and culturally appropriate care and services to all patients and populations,” said Loressa Cole, DNP, MBA, RN, FACHE, NEA-BC, FAAN, chief executive officer for the ANA Enterprise, a family of organizations composed of the ANA, American Nurses Credentialing Center, and American Nurses Foundation. “The ANA Enterprise is committed to, and highly engaged in work that will help propel the thoughtful and bold recommendations offered in this report.”
The study was intended to “chart a path for the nursing profession to help our nation create a culture of health, reduce health disparities, and improve the health and well-being of the U.S. population in the 21st century.”
Dr. Anthony Fauci addresses critical care nurses
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the chief medical advisor to President Joe Biden, served as a keynote speaker at the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition.
Held May 24-27, the exposition’s theme was entitled, “This Is Our Moment: All In.”
“We are stronger when our unique strengths come together,” said Elizabeth Bridges, PhD, RN, CCNS, FCCM, FAAN, professor, biobehavioral nursing and health systems, at the University of Washington School of Nursing and clinical nurse researcher at University of Washington Medical Center, who also serves as president of the AACN. “In these uncertain times, our theme challenges us as individuals and systems to come together and to remain connected as a community.”
Previously, Dr. Fauci had given nurses praise for inspiring the next generation of caregivers.
